HACKATHON MIRANDELA EXPERIENCE

Translation
Thanks Vito Pereira for the invitation and for sending over this video. Smart Travel Portugal, was First ever Smart Travel and Destinations congress held in the country.

An experience of passion for the territory. the restlessness and excitement of a region for sustainable and intelligent development of its huge tourism potential. Start the cart before the horse is what many European destinations, especially Mediterranean ones, heve been doing in the past, this lack of organizationa and foreseeingness, have led some tourist areas to become precisely the opposite of that which once made them attractive, uniqueness, people, traditions and landscapes. Unmercifuly, these unique features that made those places desirable locations for travellers were replaced by mammoth concrete blocks, all the way from the edge of the once picturesque beaches to the high lands or inmense landscape value.

It is precisely these pristine beaches, these rural and scenic areas which were of Mediterranean tourist destinations the place chosen by millions of families and travelers from Europe and Rest of the World, an error that to date not only has not been fixed but in many recent rounds of "construction bubbles" has been repeated over and over again. In the case of Tras-os-Montes & Alto Douro, a region of northeastern Portugal, which includes among others the beautiful surroundings of the municipalities of Bragança and Mirandela, this terrible mistake has luckily not yet been made, stroll through its rural roads and cities still reflects happily for its people, traditions, culture, respect for nature and its products. Its people are friendly, cordial, eager to learn and teach visitors their main value: themselves.

During the recent meeting Smart Travel 2014 (# smartravel14) @ smartravel14 to which I had the honor to be invited by your organization, it tuned up with what I later realized was the wrong presentation. I originally focused on the Smart Destinations understood from the technological point of view, talking about sensors, beacons, platforms and whatever else I was going to talk about. Although all of this is my current field of work, in this particular case I saw that it was not appropriate at all. The audience deserved much more.

After the keynote speeches of the best specialists and experts in Smart Cities, Social Networks and strategies specialists as Clara Soler, Urban gurus of highest prestige as Pablo Sanchez Chillon, Passionate Technologists as Steve Lewis, climate Strategists worldwide as Boyd Cohen, little could bring from that perspective in my speech, which began the next day. So I decided to talk about disruptive technologies, simply list what is available to users, businesses, accommodation and destinations, and... I decided to stop the slide and just speak from my experience, which started as a bellboy at a hotel three decades ago, to contextualize the need to return to a glorious past without technology, where we remembered the names of all our customers without need of a CRM.

Times when the kids of our tourists grew older before our eyes, returning year after year, not only to enjoy the sun, the beach or the mountains, but to see us, to share those two weeks a year with us, with their friends in Spain, or Portugal, their long loved, trusted and great friends abroad. Those were Loyal customers, adorable customers, without needing social networks they sent me a postcard every chritmas and on my birthday. Three decades later, and nearly two generations of satisfied customers, loyal friends, people carried on traveling, but that if they have to choose between seeing a new site or return to see his friend Francis, well, they choose the latter.

A destination is made up of people who love their work, who understand and share their culture, language, traditions, that show loyalty to visitors, that to me is a true Smart Destination. Congratulations to Vitor Pereira and his team, the mayors of the municipalities of Mirandela and Bragança for excelling on these event. I`ll be Back, and not for the wifi, or by their excellent apps, or by QR codes, ibeacons and augmented realities I'll be coming back to Bragança and Mirandela for them, for the people.
